I understand the nostalgia for stepping off the plane into warm island air. That first walk across the tarmac felt like the start of vacation. But I also appreciate an easier trip, more flight choices and a comfortable place to wait. And yes, we even have a Chili’s now.

A small-island airport grows up

Key West International Airport’s new Concourse A opened in 2025, with its ribbon-cutting on May 20. The roughly 49,000-square-foot concourse brought eight enclosed, air-conditioned jet bridges, more seating, charging points and expanded food and drink choices. Walking out to the aircraft had charm; staying dry in a summer downpour has its charms too.

What changed for Key West?

The old departure area was being stretched by rising passenger traffic. The expansion gives travelers more room and makes boarding easier for people who found stairs or the outdoor walk difficult. Chili’s, Starbucks and Farm2Air were among the new concessions announced at the opening. Baggage, security and ground-floor improvements formed additional phases of the project.

For residents and second-home owners, more convenient air service can make a quick visit or a trip to see family easier. It also supports local tourism and businesses. Flight access matters when choosing a home here, though it does not guarantee property appreciation or rental income.

What about those larger planes?

Key West sees mainline jets as well as smaller aircraft. Some Allegiant Airbus A320 configurations have about 180 seats. Aircraft and passenger loads vary by flight; the new concourse should not be confused with a runway extension or a promise that every flight carries 180 people.

Where did the airport people go?

The familiar seven-person sculpture is Seward Johnson’s “New Friends,” often called the “Happy Family.” Airport officials announced in March 2023 that it was being sent to New York for restoration during construction, with plans for its return. The County’s 2026 annual report still described its return as forthcoming. A confirmed reinstallation date and final location have not been established here yet, so I do not want to send you looking in the wrong spot.
